Calathea Care

Calatheas, also known as prayer plants, are a popular houseplant choice due to their unique and striking foliage patterns. These plants are native to South America and are relatively easy to care for. However, there are a few key things you should keep in mind when caring for calatheas to ensure they thrive.

Light

Calatheas prefer bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn their leaves, so it's best to place them near a window that gets filtered light or to use a sheer curtain to diffuse the light. If your calathea is not getting enough light, you may notice its leaves curling up or turning yellow.

Water

Calatheas like to be kept moist but not soggy. It's important to allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other issues, so be sure not to let your calathea sit in standing water. When you water, be sure to use room temperature water, as cold water can shock the plant.

Humidity

Calatheas are tropical plants and require a high level of humidity to thrive. They prefer humidity levels between 50-60%, which can be difficult to achieve in most homes. You can increase humidity by using a humidifier, placing a tray of water near the plant, or misting the leaves with room temperature water.

Temperature

 Calatheas prefer temperatures between 60-80°F (15-26°C). They are sensitive to temperature changes and do not like drafts, so be sure to keep them away from windows, doors, and air conditioning units.

Soil and Fertilizer

Calatheas prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. You can use a potting mix designed for tropical plants or make your own mix using equal parts peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. Fertilize your calathea once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.

Pruning and Propagation

Prune any yellow or brown leaves as soon as you notice them. This will help prevent the spread of disease and keep your plant looking healthy. Calatheas can be propagated by division, which involves separating the plant into smaller sections and repotting them.

By providing the right amount of light, water, humidity, and temperature, and using a well-draining soil and balanced fertilizer, you can enjoy the striking foliage of these plants for years to come.
